BAINBRIDGE, Berwick. Pte 3169 1/4th Btn Yorkshire Regiment.

Berwick was born in Hutton Rudby in 1893 to Henry Bainbridge aged 26, a local builder and his wife Susan aged 28. Henry married Susan Bainbridge in 1889 a distant relative, both living in Hutton Rudby. Susan died in 1903 leaving Henry to look after Walter aged 12, Alick aged 11, Berwick aged 10 and Maud aged 8. In 1905 his father married Mary Taylor and by 1911 Walter was a builders clerk, Alick a builder, Berwick a horseman on a farm and Maud assisted Mary on the farm. Mary had given birth to Edger William aged 4, Zelah aned 2 and Frederick had just been born. Berwick signed up in Darlington and joined the 1/4th Yorkshires. he was shot and admitted to number 9 General Hospital in France where he died on 14 October 1916 aged 24. Berwick is burried at St Sever [Hospital] Cemetery Extension, Rouen

His brother Alick signed up in December 1915 and survived the war
